Pipe Inspection and Analysis
The unique services, leading-edge technology and accumulated expertise of SIGHT LINES Pipe Survey Services makes it the leading specialist across Africa in pipe surveying and cleaning.

We boast with the largest fleet of CCTV inspection vehicles, and arguably, the widest range of non-man entry equipment in South Africa. The commitment to ‘sustainable development’ techniques in Africa, means that SIGHT LINES Pipe Survey Services, services South Africa and the entire continent.

Through our research and development we have developed a specialised pro-active pipe management software programmes thatrepresents all activities and data graphically and provides detailed pipe profiles that indicate lines, levels and any issues or problems.

This highly-specialised product range and service, is supported by a thorough understanding of customer requirements, world-class service and technical support.

CCTV Inspection

SIGHT LINES Pipe Survey Services can inspect any of the following applications.
  • Pipelines Ø75mm – Ø1800mm
  • Sewers and Outfall inspections
  • Laser inspections to make accurate measurements within the pipeline
  • Storm Water and Tunnels
  • Boreholes and Water mains
  • Hazardous Lines (Explosive)
  • Mine Shafts
  • The causes of Sinkholes
  • House connections
SIGHT LINES Pipe Survey Services has the ability to inspect lateral house connections from within the mainline, by means of our Lisy CCTV camera. The Lisy camera is a remote controlled device, purposely developed for the inspection of inaccessible areas and pipes.

Cleaning

Cleaning method - Drain winches

Drain winches mechanically scours large diameter pipes and culverts using custom built steel buckets and are highly effective in the rapid removal of large quantities of silt, rocks, and other large obstructions. These units are able to work efficiently on live sewer outfalls without the necessity to plug or divert the flow, and without man-entry. Long 300m cables allow for minimal set-up with maximum reach. These cleaning units, mounted on all-terrain vehicles, make virtually any pipeline accessible.

Cleaning method - Vactor™

SIGHT LINES Pipe Survey Services, boast a fleet of Vactors™ , one of the worlds most powerful sewer and drain cleaning machines. This machine uses a high pressure/vacuum combination which allows for high performance sewer and catch basin cleaning. Vactors™ are effective for unblocking and debris removal from pipes. High Pressure units with pressures up to 400bar, and 6000lt water reservoir are available to clean any system from Ø100mm up to Ø1050mm.

Pipe Management

With SIGHT LINES Pipe Survey Services superior CCTV equipment, GIS specialists and GPS surveying of manholes, we are able to produce an accurate and representative GIS on the infrastructure of your buried assets.

PicData 2000 Proactive Pipe Management software assists the client in the decision-making process and analysis of the infrastructure, resulting in massive time and cost savings. PicData 2000 software has the ability to produce scaled pipe profiles using inclinometer data taken electronically from SIGHT LINES Pipe Survey Services CCTV camera equipment.

PicData 2000 Proactive Pipe Management software is ArcView GIS and Microsoft® Windows® compatible, it's functionality includes:

Pipe Data Analysis:

By using Sight Lines Pipe Survey Services superior CCTV software “SightView” and Pipe Management software “PicData2000”, clients are able to view pipe data graphically on ArcView GIS, allowing better network analysis.

When using PicData2000 in conjunction with ArcView GIS, you can do a thorough visual analysis on your network by examining for example the different pipe diameters. Are they running in a logical pattern, is the smaller diameter pipeline running into a bigger diameter and not the other way around?

All these defects, pipe diameters, pipe type, structural weighting, maintenance weighting, job card history and even the inspected lengths can be plotted according to scale on top of an Aerial Photo for better analysis of your pipe lines.

Pipe Defect Grading Tool:

Different weightings are applied for each defect found on a project. These weightings are applicable for three categories: structural, maintenance and environmental.

Sight Lines also incorporate an "aggravated grading" system. This system aggravates the grading of a pipe based on for example, the depth, the position of the pipe and the pipe material.

It is important to note that these weightings are subjective and that should the client feel a particular failure is of greater significance, the value can be changed at any time and the grading reapplied to reflect that perception of the relative values.

Pipe Structural, Maintenance and Environmental Weightings:

After defects have been graded using the Pipe Defect Grading Tool, a priority list can be produced on all three categories: Structural, Maintenance and Environmental.

Pipe Inspection Report:

PicData2000 produces a detailed report per pipe on their defects and grading, pipe profile, and digital images linked to all severe and critical incidents.

Pipe Profile:

PicData 2000 software has the ability to produce scaled pipe profiles using inclinometer data gathered electronically from SIGHT LINES Pipe Survey Services CCTV camera equipment and SightView software.

Scaled symbols superimposed onto the pipe profile come directly from what the operator reported, and the operator has no influence on the pipe profile or the symbols. These are two independent sources showing if a "backfall" has occurred.

Thematic Map: All Incidents:

All defects found by means of CCTV cameras can be plotted onto GIS. These defects are scaled to length, this implicates that it’s imperative that an accurate GIS needs to be produced e.g. the flow direction, connectivity and distance between manholes.

Thematic Map - Pipe Diameter:

Sight Lines is also able to plot the different pipe diameters to enable us to see were a reduction in diameter occurs. E.g. a 230mmØ line running into a 150mmØ line, etc.

Thematic Map - Pipe Material:

Sight Lines is able to plot all attributes found in the field onto GIS. E.g. different pipe materials found in the network.

Thematic Map - Structural Grading:

Sight Lines incorporated a pipe grading system into their locally developed software PicData2000.

This grading system enables pipelines to be prioritized based on their structural integrity. A list of priority pipe replacements and point repairs can be produced and presented graphically onto GIS.

Job card Creation:

Picdata2000 gives you the ability to generate job cards logging the action taking, varying from different cleaning methods to different CCTV methods to all different rehabilitation methods.

PicData2000 also logs the date when a job card was issued, the person who issued it and the operator’s name to which the job card was issued.

Job card History:

After a condition assessment and the location of your infrastructure have been established, the third most important point to know about your pipes is their history. What kind of actions has taken place since they were laid? Will you be able to get your hands on these types of records without involving other departments and piles of paper work?

PicData2000 will have the answer for you in a click of a button; our job cards are linked to each individual pipe number and can be backdated if you would prefer all your data and history in one database, apposed to having all the unnecessary paper work laying all over the place.

PicData2000 job card history also has the ability to filter out pipes based on specific actions, e.g. filter all pipes based on open trench rehabilitation.
